Emrick, Hahn Remind Property Owners of Homestead Farmstead Exemption

HARRISBURG – State Reps. Joe Emrick (R-Mt. Bethel) and Marcia Hahn (R-Nazareth) would like to reminder homeowners of the Thursday, March 1, deadline to apply for property tax relief through the Homestead Farmstead Exclusion.

“Most homes and farms are eligible for property tax reduction,” Emrick said. “This is a simple program to apply for and take advantage of, and you need only apply once, provided you do not move out of your primary residence.”

As a result of the Taxpayer Relief Act of 2006, the assessed value of each homestead or farmstead is reduced by the same amount before the property tax is computed. To receive school property tax relief for tax years beginning July 1 or Jan. 1, the appropriate form must be filed before the preceding March 1.

Hahn is also reminding constituents of the Property Tax/Rent Rebate (PTRR) program.

“At this week’s budget hearings before the House Appropriations Committee, a representative of the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue testified that an estimated 90,000 residents are eligible for property tax relief under this program but do not apply,” added Hahn. “We urge all Pennsylvanians age 65 and older, widows and widowers age 50 and older, and people with disabilities age 18 and older, to check on their eligibility status for PTRR.”

Information on both the Homestead Farmstead Exclusion and the Property Tax/Rent Rebate program can be found on the members’ individual websites, www.RepEmrick.com, and www.RepHahn.com, under Property Tax Relief” on the left bar.
